Drone Stocks Surge As Unusual Machines Jumps 57% On Funding Talks

According to the Wall Street Journal, talks between drone makers and the White House are still ongoing, with the Pentagon identifying Performance Drone Works, Unusual Machines, and Neros Technologies as companies that could receive potential funding. Trump Jr. has served as an adviser to Unusual Machines since 2024 and previously invested in the company. Needham analyst Austin Bohlig said this kind of support could make sense for Unusual Machines, given the critical and supply-constrained nature of drone components and domestic manufacturing capacity. Bohlig also noted that additional drone and defense technology companies are likely involved in similar discussions, and that formal funding announcements could provide a demand signal for their products.

The broader investor takeaway is that drones may be moving deeper into the center of defense spending. Wars in Iran and Ukraine have highlighted the shift toward lower-cost, often autonomous and unmanned aircraft systems that lean heavily on software. The Pentagon has requested $75 billion for drones and counter-drone measures, tied to the Trump administration’s $1.5 trillion defense budget proposal. Swarmer (NASDAQ:SWMR), whose AI platform is used to deploy and coordinate drone swarms, closed up 17%, while Aevex (NYSE:AVEX), which debuted on April 17, gained 31%. Apollon Wealth Management chief investment officer Eric Sterner said investors are right to be bullish on the drone sector, with Pentagon-backed funding news adding another possible tailwind.
